Ambystoma mexicanum, or axolotl salamanders, are one of the most prominent biomedical laboratory species used in research such as tissue regeneration and are very popular aquarium animals. However, they are critically endangered in the wild and in need of preservation.

Purpose

Efforts to preserve and research this species would benefit from a concept map approach that highlights the entire life cycle, pinpoints all known points of intervention to perform species preservation methods, provides detailed guides for breeding, and introduces 3D printed devices that can aid in species preservation. This is what I hope to achieve with this website as it is improved and updated.

How AGGRC fits

The AGGRC is a research center at LSU that provides tools to axolotl researchers as well as the broader axolotl community so we decided to create a concept map that not only fits these criteria but is also interactive and can be accessed by researchers as well as the general public. In this way, the research of ourselves and our colleagues are accessible to anyone.

Future direction

In the future, this concept map approach can be applied to other biomedical models to streamline communication, standardize community-level activities, define methods and ideas, and provide a strong foundational understanding for people to conceptualize research.
